‘@Verdade Editorial: Mr. Ribbon Cutter

Collective knowledge says that a ‘selfish’ individual is one who believes that he or she is more important than others. Perhaps this adjective is inappropriate to describe President Armando Emílio Guebuza. But at some point, it can describe what we have seen in recent days. Because, untimely or not with just a few months until the end of his term President Guebuza has been infected by a mean case of Inauguration Syndrome. The President has consecutively appeared at events to pull back the curtain unveiling the inaugural stone of all new establishments in the country.

Guebuza will see his name engraved on the history of the country, perhaps the world, for being the Head of State who inaugurated most of these projects. The inaugural events that we have seen in the last three months have been ridiculous. For example, instead of educational institutions being opened by the Minister of Education, provincial, district or city director, whenever there are such events, the poster figure is “comrade” Armando Guebuza.

Since Guebuza became President of Mozambique, the large, medium and small-scale infrastructure have been mostly inaugurated by him, side-lining other members of his government. There is a futile effort to want to associate all endeavors with the President of the Republic.

A similar situation was found in various ministries, in which Armando Guebuza, with his “funeral” speeches favoring his own image, did not give time or space for those actually in charge of the instated institutions. In some way, this attitude shows a certain unhealthy egocentricity.

This fever of wanting to inaugurate everything before leaving power is undoubtedly worrying. In fact, the impression is that the President is narcissistic and “loves” to see his name emblazoned on the commemorative stones. We will not be surprised if on every corner, bar, association of duck breeders, barbershop and personal vehicle, we find written in large letters: “Inaugurated by His Excellency the President, Armando Emílio Guebuza”.

Joaquim Chissano, his predecessor, was not possessed by selfishness and did not focus his attention on the ceremonies of this nature. At the end of his term he left some works unfinished which Guebuza later inaugurated. We do not understand why “comrade” Guebuza does not have the same sensitivity.

Pondering the recent events and behaviour further, we can only question: Where did the President catch this spirit of “ribbon-cutting” from?
